01-29-2016 - Airport Rideshare Program Expands, Includes Lyft

Reno-Tahoe International Airport is proud to announce that effective Friday, Jan. 29th, Transportation Network Company, Lyft, can now pick-up and drop-off passengers at the airport, providing added customer service to the overall travel experience.

Lyft officials signed an operating agreement with the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority this week which grants a permit for customer pick-up at the airport terminal.

“We are excited to give ‘Lyft’ to our passengers at Reno-Tahoe International Airport,” said Airport President/CEO Marily Mora. “This new service will expand the options the traveling public has to ride downtown, to the casinos, the shopping malls, or to the ski lifts.”

While Lyft had previously been able to drop-off riders on the front curb, pick-ups were not allowed due to security reasons.  The airport now has geo-fence technology in place which enables vehicles operating for a Transportation Network Company to be tracked when entering airport property. This system also allows the airport to collect a nominal fee from the ground transportation operator, similar to hotel shuttles, taxis and limousines.

“It was important that all ground transportation operations be treated fairly, and therefore proper permitting with these unique operators was necessary,” continued Mora. “Now whether passengers choose Lyft, Uber, a taxi, limo, shuttle or private vehicle, there are multiple options to get them where they need to go.”

Lyft and Uber both interact with customers and drivers exclusively on smart phones. Once a car is ordered, a map appears on the smart phone showing the customer where to wait for their ride. The pick-up area is located outside, just north of Baggage Claim and the hotel shuttles. A shelter is provided for riders awaiting pick-up and signage is posted throughout Baggage Claim to guide the customer to the proper location.
