Honoring Our Heroes

Honor Flight Nevada

This special program, in partnership with Southwest Airlines, gives northern Nevada’s veterans the opportunity to visit national memorials in Washington, D.C. and share in a weekend of reflection and camaraderie with fellow veterans.

These trips are a heartfelt tribute, and the Reno-Tahoe community is invited to participate in the warm welcome home celebrations for our heroes. Join us in honoring these veterans at RNO on the following dates:

  • Sept. 15, 2024
  • Oct. 13, 2024
  • Nov. 17, 2024

For more information and details around welcome home events, visit the Honor Flight Nevada Facebook page.

RNO is deeply honored to be the host airport for these flights, ensuring veterans receive the hero’s welcome they deserve.

Short and Sweet

Southwest’s Shortest One-Stop Routes

Did you know that Southwest Airlines has some of the shortest one-stop routes in the U.S., and one of them flies right through RNO? Simple Flying recently reported on Southwest Airlines’ 5 Shortest One-Stop Routes and coming in at #2 is the route from Burbank to San Jose via RNO—covering less than 300 miles.

RNO keeps you well-connected with short one-stop and nonstop routes!

Up, Up and Away

The Great Reno Balloon Races Take Flight

The skies over Reno were filled with color and wonder as the Great Reno Balloon Races returned September 6-9. This beloved event is the world’s largest free hot air balloon festival, attracting pilots and spectators from across the globe to witness almost 100 balloons take to the skies in one of Reno’s most iconic annual traditions.

Did you know? Hot air balloon pilots are also required to follow FAA guidelines. Because piloted balloons operate in controlled airspace, pilots must adhere to rules designed to keep our skies safe, including altitude restrictions and communication with air traffic control. While flying a balloon may seem very different from piloting a plane, both types of aviators share similar responsibilities when it comes to safety and navigation.

RNO Secures $4.3 Million Grant for Airfield Enhancements

RNO has been awarded a $4.3 million Supplemental Discretionary Grant to fund the airport’s Airfield Signage Replacement and Taxiway Renaming project. This important investment will improve RNO’s airfield safety, efficiency and sustainability.

The project includes renaming taxiways, adding new and more visible taxiway signs and transitioning to updated technologies that enhance navigation for pilots and ground crews. These upgrades will not only improve airfield safety but also reduce the need for ongoing maintenance, ensuring a more sustainable and cost-effective operation.

RNO continues it’s commitment to modernizing the airport, beyond the very visible MoreRNO Infrastructure Program that’s in progress, showcasing the airport’s priority to safety.

Labor Day Travel Across the Country

RNO wasn’t the only busy hub—airports across the country experienced some of the highest travel volumes in history, as reported by TravelPulse. Labor Day weekend saw a massive surge in air travel across the U.S., breaking previous records with more than 15 million passengers processed by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) over a six-day period.
