10-10-2017 - Ruck March Kicks off Reno-Stead's 75th Anniversary

RENO, Nev. – Reno‐Stead Airport is celebrating its 75th anniversary October 2017 through summer of 2018 and the commemoration begins with a unique ruck march in honor of Reno‐Stead’s colorful military history at 9 a.m., Nov. 4.

The competitive ruck (backpack) march honors the airport’s history when it served as the Air Force survival training school. During the Cold War, pilots were trained at Stead to survive desert and mountain conditions while being pursued by the enemy.

The ruck march is a walk/run on a 10K course around the airfield for the benefit of the Food Bank of Northern Nevada and the Veterans Guest House. It can be done with or without a rucksack for a $25 registration fee that benefits the Veterans Guest House. The preferred method is to fill a ruck with non‐perishable food for donation to the Food Bank. The march ends with a BBQ lunch, free for every registered participant.

Individuals who would like to participate, but not run/walk the entire course, may purchase a $15 wristband to walk the final ½ mile with the ruck marchers and enjoy lunch.

“Reno‐Stead has a colorful history intertwining military and aviation unlike any other place in Nevada. This ruck march celebrates that history in a fun and unique way that will benefit those in need,” said Marily Mora, President and CEO of Reno‐Tahoe Airport Authority.

The march is open to individuals or teams.

In October 1942, Reno Army Air Base began operations at what was later the 192nd Fighter Squadron, Nevada Air National Guard, and finally named Stead Air Force Base. The base was home to the Strategic Air Command’s Survival School, Flying Training Wing (helicopters), and Reno Air Defense Sector. In 1966, Reno‐Stead Airport began operating as a general aviation airport and is now under the direction of the Reno‐Tahoe Airport Authority.
