How to Obtain a Security Badge or AOA ID at RNO
Badge Renewal Process:
The date on the front of the badge is the expiration date. Badges expire one minute after midnight on the last date of the month shown. It is the employee’s responsibility to renew his/her badge before it expires. Sponsoring companies receive a list of expiring badges each month so that those up for renewal may be reminded. A badge may be renewed any time during the month it is expiring or the month previous to its expiration. All employees renewing a badge must complete the training required for their badge’s access level.
All individuals renewing an RNO ID badge must:
- Complete an RNO RENEWAL Application – Badging Forms
- Bring the completed application and identification to the Badging Office: You are required to re-submit original, unexpired identification documents to prove identity and employment eligibility (view badging forms for Acceptable Documents list) at the time you renew your badge. Please note that individuals born outside of the U.S. have specific identification requirements.
- Get fingerprinted: Your fingerprints may need to be electronically recaptured. The fingerprint process takes approximately 10 minutes.
- Undergo computer-based training: Individuals with access to secured areas and/or driving authority will undergo computer training.
If a badge has expired or been deactivated for a period of more than 30 days, another fingerprint criminal history records check and threat assessment must be conducted before the badge can be reissued.
New Badge Process – Security Access Badge
The following steps outline the process to obtain an RNO security access badge:

- Be sure one of your company’s Authorized Signatories completes and signs the “Authorized Signatory” section on page two of the badge application

- Get fingerprinted: The fingerprint process takes approximately 10 minutes. Your fingerprints are electronically captured by Badging Office personnel and then sent to the FBI where they are checked against a national database to ensure there are no disqualifying crimes in your background.
- Undergo a Security Threat Assessment: A Security Threat Assessment (STA) is an evaluation performed by the TSA which involves the comparison of an individual’s identifying information against a number of national databases that contain identifying information of persons of interest to the US Government. RNO’s Badging Office must collect the required information from each badge, verify the identification documents produced and submit the information to the TSA via a secure website. The TSA then conducts its assessment and notifies RNO’s Badging Office whether or not the applicant is cleared to become a badge holder. This evaluation can take from two to five days to complete.
- Undergo computer based training: Applicants for access to secured areas must also successfully complete any training required as a result of their access level designation. Applicants who are assigned driving authority must also successfully complete computer based training.
