Loop Road Improvements
Now Open
RNO completed major upgrades to the Loop Road, ensuring a safer, more accessible, and smoother experience for all passengers. This project included significant infrastructure improvements to both inner and outer travel lanes, adding new safety features, meeting ADA compliance standards, and providing a more comfortable drop-off and pick-up experience. The Loop Road improvements mark the second completed project in the ongoing multi-year MoreRNO Infrastructure Program.

Safety Upgrades
The Loop Road project introduced 74 protective bollards to enhance passenger safety by creating barriers between pedestrians and vehicles. Rumble strips were also installed to remind drivers to slow down, and the number of crosswalks was reduced from five to three, improving overall vehicular flow and reducing congestion.

Accessibility and Convenience
With nearly a mile of truncated domes installed, the project prioritized ADA accessibility throughout the airport. Sidewalks along the garage were widened, providing more space for passengers with luggage, and flush curbs with additional ramps now offer smoother, more accessible transitions on both the departure and arrival sides of the terminal.

Enhanced Passenger Experience
The Loop Road project was completed on time, within budget, and without any major injuries, underscoring the team’s commitment to a safer, more efficient travel experience. Passengers will benefit from improved visibility and safety thanks to elevated crosswalks, while covered pedestrian walkways ensure comfort in any weather.
Sustainability
The project prioritized sustainability throughout its design and execution. The canopies are lit with energy-efficient LED lighting, creating a more eco-friendly environment at night. Wherever possible, local suppliers and recycled materials were used, including crushing and recycling approximately 20,000 cubic feet of concrete for reuse. An energy-efficient snow melt system was installed on the canopies to reduce long-term energy consumption. Additionally, careful attention to roadway grading and pavement design allowed the use of existing materials on-site, minimizing the need for new resources and reducing overall waste.
Construction Highlights
The Loop Road project was carefully phased to minimize disruption, with the goal of enhancing the passenger experience at every stage. The construction team’s dedication to this priority is evident in the final result, significantly improving the safety and convenience for travelers.
Use of Materials
The Loop Road project improved 1,800 linear feet of roadway, utilizing approximately 170 tons of steel for the canopy construction and applying 5,500 tons of asphalt over multiple phases.
Infrastructure Investments
Sustainability was a key focus of the project, with eco-friendly fortification bollards installed to enhance safety, and new drainage improvements implemented to protect the airport’s critical infrastructure. A trench drain was also installed to ensure efficient water drainage away from the loading and unloading lanes.
Safety Accomplishments
Seventy-four protective bollards were installed to safeguard passengers and the building, and rumble strips were added to remind drivers to reduce their speed as they approach the terminal. In addition, the construction team achieved no time lost due to injury throughout the project, a reflection of their commitment to safety.
