As the summer* of 2024 approaches, Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) is gearing up to welcome travelers with an impressive boost in air service. With over 90,000 more seats available compared to summer 2023, RNO is set to offer exciting connectivity and convenience to passengers.
The Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority (RTAA) continues its efforts to enhance air travel options, which is evident in the steady return of seasonal flights scheduled for this summer season and not to mention, the exciting addition of a new route to Atlanta, Georgia.
Whether it’s reconnecting with loved ones, jetting off on a well-deserved vacation, or traveling for business, passengers can rely on RNO to deliver seamless and enjoyable travel experiences.

In the world of airport construction, where every project demands precision, innovation and seamless coordination, there’s one individual who stands out for his commitment and expertise: Cody Harris, Project Superintendent at McCarthy Building Companies, Inc.
| Q: How long have you been with McCarthy and what highlights of your career brought you here? | Harris: I have been with McCarthy for over a decade, starting as a project intern in 2013. While my initial interest in construction was sparked by influences like the Discovery Channel and a family-owned business, it was something I pursued throughout my studies at Montana State University. My career at McCarthy has been shaped by diverse projects in aviation and hospitality, including notable ones like the renovation of the Palms and the baggage recapitalization at Harry Reid International Airport. |
| Q: Describe your role as Project Superintendent for the Ticketing Hall Expansion project. | Harris: As the superintendent, my role involved extensive coordination and problem-solving with various stakeholders. I was involved from the early stages: developing phasing plans, schedules, and logistical approaches for the project. During construction, I oversaw all aspects of the work, ensuring minimal disruption to airport operations. Managing multiple trades, implementing short-term schedules, and collaborating with industry partners were key responsibilities, making each day fast-paced and challenging. |
| Q: What was the biggest challenge you faced with this project? | Harris: The complex phasing and logistics posed the biggest challenge. Running double shifts throughout the project, coordinating with airline stakeholders, and completing tasks within tight timeframes required constant communication and innovation. One of the major milestones was completing the “floor sequence” work in front of the ticket counters, which demanded meticulous planning and execution to ensure operational continuity and safety. |
| Q: What did you enjoy most about the project? | Harris: I particularly enjoyed the collaborative environment at RNO. From the airport staff to passengers, everyone was committed to the success of the project and the MoreRNO program. The positive culture and camaraderie made each day fulfilling, and the project will be remembered as a highlight of my career. |
| Q: Can you talk about your decision to move here for the project? | Harris: Initially, moving here was a decision I embraced, drawn by the allure of the outdoors and a vibrant community. Though it posed challenges, particularly leaving behind our Vegas friends and family, my wife and I have found a welcoming home in Reno. We’ve immersed ourselves in outdoor activities like hiking and kayaking, cherishing every moment with our growing family. |

In a significant achievement for the airport, the first project under the MoreRNO program has been successfully completed – on time and on budget! The Ticketing Hall Expansion marks the inaugural milestone, ushering in a new era of enhanced facilities and passenger amenities.
This transformative project brings passengers an impressive 10,000 square feet of additional space for airline queuing, for a total of 30,000 square feet of remodeled area. Sustainability takes center stage with advancements such as enhanced airflow circulation by new automatic doors and the incorporation of 1,500 square feet of reclaimed wood sourced from the West Coast. The infusion of natural elements extends further with over 5,000 square feet of glass, allowing more natural light to brighten the space.
As the first project to reach completion under the MoreRNO program, the Ticketing Hall Expansion sets a high standard for future initiatives. With its blend of sustainability, modernization and passenger-centric design, it serves as a testament to RNO’s dedication to enhancing airport infrastructure.
The inner driving lane construction, closest to the main entrance, is now complete. Travelers will once again have the convenience of being dropped-off and picked-up closer to the Main Terminal Building. This moves construction to the outer driving lanes, closest to the parking garage, set to be complete in Fall 2024. Between now and then, traffic flows will change multiple times, so take it slow and watch for directional signage.
