03-05-14 - UAS Industry Expert Headed to Northern Nevada

Rapp to lead Business Development for Unmanned Aerial Systems at Reno-Stead Airport

(Reno, NV) – Lt. Col. Warren Rapp, who was raised in Reno, has been selected to lead the Program Management Office for the Nevada Institute of Autonomous systems at Reno-Stead Airport.

Bowhead Business and Technology systems, working for the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, made the hiring announcement of this key UAS position that will serve Northern Nevada from an office at Reno- Stead Airport’s new Freedom Flight Terminal beginning this April.

Lt. Col. Rapp is currently a Commander of a Nevada Air Guard UAS Operational Squadron in Southern Nevada.  He will soon retire and come home to serve as the NIAS PMO Northern Nevada Range Coordinator and Unmanned Autonomous Systems (UAS) Business Development Office.  Rapp, who attended Roy Gomm, Swope Middle School and Reno High, turned down other job offers to come home and help get the UAS industry off the ground in Northern Nevada.

He served as a pilot in the military for 26 years, first in the Marine Corps, and for the last 16 years in the Nevada Air National Guard. Rapp was already working with the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority, the University of Nevada-Reno, and the Desert Research Institute as a part of his previous assignment serving as a UAS military advisor for Governor Sandoval's UAS economic development committee.

Once in place, the Reno NIAS PMO office will bolster the UAS development and implementation services currently being offered to the entire state from the main office in Las Vegas.  “The UAS development door is wide open right now" said Rapp, “and Nevada has been given the opportunity to be one of the industry leaders in the U.S. Nevada has already taken the lead on UAS research and development applications including  firefighting, agriculture, meteorology, mining, and wildlife management.” The global UAS industry is forecasted to grow into a $90 billion business by 2023, and current efforts by the NIAS PMO and the State of Nevada are expected to bring a huge economic benefit to the region.
