American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA)
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) was signed into law by President Obama on February 17, 2009.  Included in this unprecedented multi-billion dollar effort to help save and create jobs and to invest directly into infrastructure is $1.1 billion that can be awarded by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to airports through Airport Improvement Grants (AIP).  Airport projects which improve capacity, safety, security and aircraft noise compatibility are all eligible with priority given to ready-to-go projects that can be completed within two years.

On March 12, 2009, the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority Board of Trustees approved continued design work for the ongoing apron reconstruction project at Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) in anticipation of receiving ARRA funding for Phase 12 of this project.  This apron reconstruction work improves the pavements of some of the most heavily used aprons at RNO.  Finishing this work as soon as possible will greatly enhance the efficiency and safety of operations at RNO.

On July 16, 2009, the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority Board of Trustees approved continued design work for the ongoing apron reconstruction project at Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) in anticipation of receiving ARRA funding for Phase 13 of this project.  This apron reconstruction work improves the pavements of some of the most heavily used aprons at RNO.  Finishing this work as soon as possible will greatly enhance the efficiency and safety of operations at RNO.

ARRA Certification and Progress
The Governor, mayor or other chief executive, as appropriate, is required to certify that the infrastructure investment has received the full review and vetting required by law and that the chief executive accepts responsibility that the infrastructure investment is an appropriate use of taxpayer dollars.

Krys T. Bart, A.A.E., President/CEO of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority, certified on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 that the ARRA infrastructure project has received the review and vetting required by law and is an appropriate usage of taxpayer funds.

Airport West Development
The 10-acre property at the corner of Terminal Way and East Plumb Lane on the west side of the Reno-Tahoe International Airport is soon to be developed with new commercial opportunities. As the centerpiece of the development, a new six-story 127-room Hyatt Place Hotel will be constructed on three acres in the middle of the project. The Hyatt Place Hotel is an all suite, non-gaming facility with architecture that will feature natural colors and rock facades.  Construction of the hotel is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2009. In addition to the new Hyatt Place Hotel, office, retail, and restaurant facilities are also planned for the remainder of the property.

New Air Traffic Control Tower Facilities
The existing 70-foot tall Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) was constructed in 1954 and served the airport’s needs for more than 50 years, but it does not comply with the new more stringent seismic structural standards and is therefore being replaced. A new 200-foot tall tower with an 11,000 square foot base building began construction in January 2008 on property leased by the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).  The construction contract for the new ATCT is between the FAA and Devcon Construction. The new facility is scheduled to be operational in late 2010. The new tower will include the most technologically advanced equipment available and will have unobstructed views of all aircraft movement areas as well as the surrounding airspace.
